Frederick was discharged from the British Army on 8 February 1916 for "having been convicted by the civil power of an offence committed before enlistment...".

Frederick and his brothers William & Charles all joind the British Army in 1915 but were discharged after being convicted of "assault occasioning actual bodily harm". They were convicted on 19 October 1915.

Frederick was sentenced to 18 months hard labour but was this reduced on appeal to 12 months hard labour.

It appears that the brothers joined the British Army in order to avoid a prison sentence - to no avail as it turned out.
